Street Art (2013) - Let the people Pom Pom!

Rhiwbina – where the knitted trees grow.

Rhiwbina came out in knitwear over night for the Rhiwbina festival on June 29th. It was the culmination of a two week secret urban knitting project with Jo Jones as part of Beulah’s street art, exploring the theme of our year: ‘Become like a child: Free in the Spirit.

The knitted trees, bollards and scooter and the post box mop cap were produced by a number of chatty knitters of all ages. Even graffiti Jesus has a bobble hat! They knitted, separately and together, privately and even knitted publically.

The knitting expresses several things, it is our way of playfully becoming like children again. It is an attempt to invite people to look again at the environment we are in and see its beauty with new eyes.

We don’t see the knitwear as adding to the beauty of the trees, rather it points it out to us in a new way. Needless to say the act of knitting together was fantastic fun, full of laughter and mutual support. The Spirit in which it was done was playful and joyful and communal.

It is also only phase one, future phases are coming, so look out and let the people pom pom!
