Eco Church GROWN NOT FLOWN In the Spring of 2022, we made plans to hold a sustainable flower festival in the September but, to do that, we had to grow the flowers first! Importing flowers from overseas can produce up to ten times the carbon footprint of locally grown flowers so we decided that all the arrangements would be created from blooms, plants and foliage grown by the community. We also wanted to avoid the use of oasis, or floral foam, which is unsustainable and non-recyclable. Local churches, organisations and businesses soon got involved and seeds and plants were handed out to those willing to grow flowers. As the festival was set up, people brought their flowers and foliage to decorate the church and contribute to the beautiful arrangements. Our spectacular Grown Not Flown Flower Festival provided an opportunity to enjoy the glorious and abundant flowers we had grown in our gardens and allotments, and to start a conversation about the environmental impacts of the floral industry. Several hundred came into the church, some for the first time since the pandemic. Visitors also had an opportunity to hear from a local flower farm about earth-friendly growing methods.
